MEET THE VOXIES - A2: Engela Labuschagne

Meet our Astonishing Alto: Engela Labuschagne #Vox_Tribe

Q: What is your day job?

A: I am a Curriculum Development Specialist and manage the learning management system for Curro Digital Learning.

Q: How many years have you been singing in a choir?

A: I was born screaming and have never stopped singing since. I have been part of formal choirs for 32 years. Every school year and every year of my adult life.🎼

Q: What has been your most memorable experience with Vox to date?

A: Performing Franco's Christmas Oratorio: "Lig van Waarheid" in the Grootte Kerk, Kaapstad with the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra. The emotions I felt whilst performing this magnificent work, was overwhelming!

Q: What do you enjoy the most about being part of Vox?

A: Sharing a life with people who love what I love and knowing that I have a space where I can whole heartedly be myself.

Q: Which piece is your favourite that you have performed with Vox Chamber Choir?

A: “Liefdesdag” composed by our conductor, Franco Prinsloo, using the poem “Liefdesdag” by Breyten Breytenbach as text for the composition. When singing this work, I feel more love for the people in my life than ever before. I sing this to my children when they go to bed, and it calms them and makes them feel safe. Watch it here, you will understand what I am talking about!🥰

Q: What do you look forward to the most with Vox Chamber Choir?

A: Performing “Kruis van Liefde” for Easter on 15 March 2023! This work is so big and powerful. I listen to it every day and I can’t wait to perform it. Have you bought your tickets yet???

Q: In which Vox-Tet (our octets) are you?

A: Die Heilige Hildegard Harmoniste (Team Red)❤️ – The 2022 winners of the very sought after "Jano Oberholzer Wissel Trofee", as well as the 2023 Vox Potjiekos winners.🏆

Q: If you could have a superpower, what would it be?

A: The power to read minds…but only when I choose to. Not all the time. Sometimes people find it hard to talk, and I would like to be able to help them without them speaking a word.

Q: What are you reading/binge watching at the moment:

1. Reading – I am currently jumping between “Vlam in die Sneeu” and “Teach like a Champion”;

2. Watching – I started with Big Bang Theory recently, as well as watching Friends (again for the millionth time). I prefer reading and put these on as “background noise”.

Q: Name another hobby/interest you participate in?

A: I enjoy crafting, cooking and gardening. I have a keen interest in how we can use technology for learners in education. I spend a lot of my free time researching this and figuring out ways to implement it.

Q: Name a section in "Kruis van Liefde" that gives you goosebumps every time:

A: "VI. Resitatief: ‘n Groot Menigte". Wow, when the men start singing “VII. Vroue van Jerusalem” in this section, my knees become jelly and my whole body get goosies. It is just too much for me, I am overcome every time with emotion. Have a listen to it here below:

Get your tickets at Tixsa for 15 March, Kruis van Liefde, live at NG Universiteitsoord, Pretoria here. You do not want to miss this magical choral experience. Click here to get your tickets today!

Q: If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?

A: Right now, at this very moment, I would love to go back to Germany with my family and show my son where he was born. I would love to go during the European summer and spend time with old friends and travel the winelands and visit wine festivals while binge eating cherries.
